In 1938, Continental introduced the A50, an improved version of their groundbreaking A40 of 1931. In early 1939, the A65 introduced refinements that allowed increased horsepower for the same displacement. The military designation for the A65 was the O-170. The A-65 was a more powerful version of the O-170 (50 HP). The additional 15 HP made quite a difference in the performance of the small two-seat light planes formerly equipped with the 50 HP version. The extra power helped most during takeoffs and climbs, but also boosted speed by a few miles per hour. This power cost a little bit of time in the air, however, as the A-65 burned a little more fuel.
